Scientific Research at Micke Grove Zoo 

Scientific Advancement and Research

MGZ encourages and provides support to zoo staff, zoo volunteers, and other researchers to conduct hands-off and non-invasive scientific research of its animal residents and their habitats. Scientific research that provides new insights into fields such as animal welfare, animal behavior, animal health, and conservation biology is encouraged and supported. MGZ supports researchers to share the findings from their research projects with the scientific community by publishing them in international, peer-reviewed journals to promote scientific advancement and to improve the knowledge base to students and researchers. MGZ maintains application forms for scientific advancement that are filled for all research projects that are conducted within the facility.

MGZ prioritizes scientific research based on:

Scientific research from these proposals improves the health and wellbeing of MGZ's zoo population. These include research on

  • Environmental enrichment: types of enrichment items, enrichment techniques and methods that are popular and successful when implemented
  • Animal training: research on animal training techniques that are more successful in achieving desired outcomes is also considered a priority
  • Enclosure/ habitat design: new and innovative ideas of using enclosure space or new designs that improves health and wellbeing for the zoo population.
  • Animal health: new techniques in assessing their health or new electronic devices that fasten or smoothen the animal health examination process.
  • Electronics: research finds new techniques or electronic devices that make it easier for staff to daily husbandry notes
